We’ll show, through presentations, chemistry’s facet that could be considered as magic by layperson

During 2011, the project « Chimie Science Magique » will introduce to general public, school children and high scholars, chemistry carried out by first year students at Université Montpellier 2 as part of the educative unit “Chemistry Magical Science” (see http://www.magique.univ-montp2.fr/). Thus we’ll show, through presentations, chemistry’s facet that could be considered as magic by layperson (supra-conductive levitation,  ferrofluid’s properties, fluorescence and phosphorescence, shape memory alloy, thermochromism, ...). We’ll emphasise on the fact that high technology material synthesis is not a matter of super specialised people, but it can be treated in a simple way by students. Furthermore, we’ll make an attempt to bring some simple ideas to explain the mechanism of these “magical” materials. For teachers, we’ll make an attempt to exemplify the positive effects of a totally integrated education as in the discipline “Chimie Science Magique”, on the transfer of training to both students and general public.

Topic: workshops, presentations Audience: general public, school children, students, scientists, educators, secondary schools
