Sustainable development is seeking to meet the needs of the present without compromising those of future generations. Sustainable development in Chemistry will help the world, regions, nationals, countries, societies be economically prosperous, socially sensitive and environmentally responsible.

Sustainable development is seeking to meet the needs of the present without compromising those of future generations. According to the Kofi Annan, Former United Nations Secretary–General “Our biggest challenge in this new century is to take an idea that seems abstract — sustainable development — and turn it into a reality for all the world’s people.”

As per United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development, There are three strategic perspectives to inform education and learning for sustainable development; 1. Socio-cultural perspectives, 2. Environmental perspectives, and 3. Economic perspectives. By following the sustainable development, we can expect the world, regions, nationals, countries, and societies etc economically prosperous, socially sensitive and environmentally responsible. With out “CHEMISTRY” it seems to be impossible to achieve goals of Sustainable Development (SD). It’s time to go ahead From Awareness to Practice with Chemistry Education and Research. The targets of SD through Chemistry can be gained by introducing SD courses in Chemistry syllabus from primary to tertiary and educating the graduates through this concept.  Few among several steps are; 1. Development of SD courses in all fields of Chemistry 2. Research should be focused on SD 3. Popularization of SD concept through training courses, workshops, conferences at national, regional, and global level 4. Educating the educators etc.

Topic: workshops, hands-on activities, conferences, courses Audience: general public, educators, professional chemists

Chemistry is one of the major field of scientific research and innovations. The idea for SD is to educate students/researchers during their studies so that future inventions would be safe for future generation. We are facing problems in health, environment, food etc and with SD we can expect our present and future would be safe and beautiful. SD detail is available in UNESCO website.
