A World of Polymers

A video and essay contest explores “A World without Polymers” in celebration of the IYC 2011

Have you ever imagined what the world would be like without polymers? Polymers are molecules with repeating structural units that are used in an extraordinary number of processes and applications. They have a diverse array of properties and play essential roles in everyday life. Polymers are present in everything from plastics and elastics to biopolymers, such as DNA and proteins.

IUPAC invites high school and college students to use their imaginations to create interesting video and essay interpretations of what the world would be like in the absence of polymers. The three best videos will be awarded a prize by the IUPAC Polymer Division, and the authors will be invited to present their work at the IUPAC 46th General Assembly in San Juan, Puerto Rico, in 2011.

Students are asked to upload their videos (10 minute maximum) to YouTube or submit their essays (5 page maximum) to IUPAC from November 1, 2010 through May 31, 2011. Winners will be notified by June 30, 2011.
