RHS East Space, London College of Fashion, 20 John Princes St, London, W1G 0BJ

Professor Monique S.J. Simmonds, Deputy Keeper & Head of Sustainable Uses of Plants Group, Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew

Plant-based products have been used for many centuries to treat skin diseases.  This talk will provide an overview of the diversity of plants used to treat skin diseases as well as those used in cosmetics in different parts of the world.   In some cases there is scientific evidence to support these traditional uses.   Currently Kew is working with different collaborators to evaluate the beneficial properties of these plants and support the cultivation of those plants that can be shown to be beneficial. The talk will provide an insight into some of the challenges faced by those involved in developing new plant-derived products but also the opportunity these studied have for supporting the conservation of plant diversity.
