The organising committee of the International Year of Chemistry 2011 at the Department of Chemistry, University of Nairobi, is planing to officiially launch IYC 2011 celebrations through half day of activities on 25th March 2011 at Central Catering Unit, University of Nairobi.
The UN assembly declared the year 2011 as the International Year of Chemistry (IYC 2011). IYC 2011 is an initiative of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) and of the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). The goals of IYC 2011 are to increase public awareness and appreciation of chemistry in meeting world needs, to encourage interest in chemistry among young people, and to generate enthusiasm for the creative and entrepreneurship future of chemistry.
During the launch we will have speakers on various aspects of chemistry, its applications in different sectors of the economy, its role in development and Vision 2030, and the challenges of teaching chemistry at secondary, tertiary and related levels.
This launch will present an excellent opportunity for interaction among stake holders from different sectors of chemistry and related sciences.
The event is organised in conjunction with Dow Chemicals, which is an IYC 2011 Global Partner.
The program of activities include various talks on the contribution of chemistry to Kenya's economy.
