Professor C.N.R. Rao is the National Research Professor and Linus Pauling Research Professor and Honorary President of Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research, Bangalore, India. He is also Distinguished Visiting Professor, Department of Materials, University of California, Santa Barbara.

Prof. Rao is Chairman, Science Advisory Council to the Prime Minister and the past President of The Academy of Sciences for the Developing World (TWAS). Prof. Rao is a fellow of 25 science academies. He has the unique honour of being a Fellow/Member of all the major academies of the world including The Royal Society London, National Academy of Sciences, USA. He has received 48 honoris causa doctorate degrees from various universities around the world.

Prof. Rao has received several international and national awards/medals including the Royal Society of Chemistry (London) Medal, Albert Einstein Gold Medal, Hevrovsky Gold Medal, Hughes Medal, Royal Medal (The Queen's Medal) by RSC, Padma Shri, Padma Vibhushan, Bhatnagar Prize, India Science Award, C.V. Raman Centenary Medal.
