UBC Chemistry invites the public to the department to check out what we do, and celebrate IYC during the National Week of Chemsitry. With presentations, demos, hands-on activities, facility tours and liquid nitrogen ice-cream, this is sure to be a great day of chemistry for everyone!
Where will you be when the magic gets explained? UBC Chemistry invites all members of the West Point Grey community to the University to discover the magic behind everyday chemical phenomena. The day starts at 9am and has an open house format. With a variety of presentations and demonstrations on topics including thermodynamics, kinetics, organic chemistry, and polymers, patrons will be able to explore the exciting world of chemistry at their leisure. Hands-on activities, liquid nitrogen ice-cream tasting and facility tours will be run throughout the entire day to supplement hourly demonstrations. Free give-aways and family oriented events (such as face painting) will be scattered throughout the building as a way of encouraging exploration of facilities in the department.
This event has been planned by the UBC Chemistry Outreach Committee, and runs solely on a volunteer basis. Volunteers include emeritus faculty, research faculty, instructors, staff, graduate students, and undergraduate students who will be involved as presenters, demonstrators, tour guides and general ambassadors for chemists around the world.
Because of the diversity of the demonstrations being performed, as well as the enthusiasm of our volunteers from various levels of expertise, we believe that this event is ideal for an all ages audience. We fully expect to overcome the activation barrier for kick-starting an interest in chemistry in today's youth and the general public.
We believe we have embodied the mandate of IYC - celebrating the achievements of chemistry and it's contributions to the well-being of human kind.
