IYC 2011 Celebration in Nigeria

The department of chemistry, University of Uyo is hosting a five day program to celebrate chemistry. The activities are generally planned to increase the public understanding and appreciation of chemistry in a society where interest in the subject is diminishing.

 

The department of chemistry will be joining the rest of the world to celebrate IYC  2011 by hosting  activities from March 21-25, 2011. The events are lined up to generally improve the understanding and appreciation of the science of chemistry especially in our community where such is lacking. The week will start with electronic and print media programs highlighting the achievements of chemistry and its contribution to the well-being of humankind. Expected to take part in the celebrations will be students from elementary to tertiary levels, industrial chemist, chemical educators and the general public. The events are lined up as follows:

DAY ONE: MONDAY MARCH 21, 2011

- Publication of a feature article in a popular local daily newspaper

- Hourly for whole day airing of a radio commentary on the theme chemistry our life our future

- Thirty minutes airing of a radio discussion program featuring selected chemistry students and staff from University of Uyo talking about achievements of Chemistry and making a case for the integration of chemical technology in National development

Out reach to Public schools to encourage the interest of young people in Chemistry

DAY TWO: TUESDAY MARCH 22, 2011

- Thirty minutes airing of Television (TV) discussion Program on the theme Chemistry- our life, our future

Out reach to Public Schools to encourage the interest of young people in Chemistry

DAY THREE: WEDNESDAY MARCH 23, 2011

- Chemistry outreach to selected elementary and secondary schools within the three senatorial district of Akwa Ibom State, that will feature, hands on activity, career counseling, demonstration experiments and quiz 


DAY FOUR: THURSDAY MARCH 24, 2011

- Formal Opening and Public presentation of University of Uyo Chemistry Newsletter

Special Guest of Honor His Excellency Obong (Dr) Godswill Akpabio (Governor of Akwa Ibom State)

- Poster Presentation Session show casing Chemistry in University of Uyo

DAY FIVE: FRIDAY MARCH 25, 2011

- Public Lecture title: The Role of Chemistry in National Development

Speaker: Dr Eninag Nkan (Chairman, Weatherford Nigeria Limited)

- Awards ceremony in recognition of outstanding Individualst within our community
