A conference will be organized to review the past and present practices and challenges of chemistry education at secondary and tertiary levels of Ethiopia and to propose innovative/modern system based on international experiences.

Directly following the 27th annual congress of the Chemical Society of Ethiopia in February 2011, the CSE will organize a conference to explore the present situation and challenges of chemistry education in Ethiopia and to propose alternative future directions in line with international trends.

The event is to target chemistry professors from tertiary level and chemistry teachers from secondary level and to bring together at the national level a critical mass of chemistry educators to improve chemistry education at the secondary and tertiary levels. The conference will be facilitated by external resource persons and that, in coordination with the IUPAC Committee on Chemistry Education.

In this instance, Ethiopia is focusing appropriately on chemistry teacher training and aims to

(1) introduce innovative and cost- effective laboratory instruction in chemistry education,

(2) empower chemistry instructors in designing and implementing contextualized and learner-centered chemistry education, and

(3) promote innovative ways of training quality chemistry teachers.

Participants of the conference will be drawn from the 23 regional universities, 26 teacher training colleges and some representative secondary school chemistry teachers. It is also expected that members of the Chemical Society of Ethiopia will attend the conference since they will be in the capital city for the 27th Annual Congress of CSE, planned to take place the next day following completion of this conference.  The conference will also serve as the major strategy of celebrating the IYC-2011 in Ethiopia.

The conference will include workshops on “Structure-oriented chemistry teaching”, “Micro-scale chemistry”, “Laboratory chemical safety and security”, “Visualizations in chemistry”, “Young Ambassadors for Chemistry (YAC)”, etc.

About YAC
One important component of the conference is the Young Ambassadors for Chemistry (YAC) initiative; YAC will take new approaches to chemistry education from the conference to ‘the public square’. YAC facilitates the flow of ideas between chemistry and society using young people as mediators. YAC utilizes a “train the trainers” approach so that teachers can help students communicate the benefits of chemistry, and in doing so increase public interest in chemistry. YAC events have been successfully held in 13 countries – in this case it will be directly integrated into the conference in Addis Ababa.

Topic: chemistry education, hands-on activities, conferences, celebrating chemistry Audience: professional chemists, educators, professors, tertiary education, secondary schools

I would like to discuss some very basic problems in learning Bohr's theory of hydrogen - which is of prime importance to physics and chemistry both. For details, read my "activity" dated 19th November 2010, on this site.

Ethiopia conducted the FCP and YAC events in February this year as part the IYC-2011 activities. Pictures from the FCP and YAC are available on the website of the Federation of African Societies of Chemistry faschem.org: here for the FCP and here for the YAC.
