Thanks to the join initiative of Real Sociedad Española de Química and Foro QUÍMICA y SOCIEDAD, next year 2011 the Spanish Postal Office will issue a Commemorative Postage Stamp to celebrate 2011 International Year of Chemistry, as well as the Centennial of the Chemistry Nobel Prize for Maria Sklodowska-Curie.
The Spanish 2011 IYQ Commemorative Stamp has been presented. It is a current-use stamp showing IYC logo and an –to this date- unpublished image of Marie Curie, for the stamp also commemorates the 100th anniversary of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry awarded to this great scientist.
Marie Sklodowska Curie’s picture was taken at the “Residencia de Estudiantes” in Madrid, a boarding house owned and managed by the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) and serving as meeting point for international researchers, artists and creators of different areas. Marie Sklodowska Curie stayed twice at the Residencia: once on April 23, 1931, to pronounce the lecture “Radioactivity and the evolution of science” and later on, in May 1931, to preside, as vice-president, the second meeting of the Committee of the Arts & Letters Committee of the Institute of Intellectual Cooperation of the League of Nations.
The Commemorative Stamp size is 40.9 x 28.8 mm, and is printed by calc-offset. The official launching will take place in Madrid on February.
