The OpenLab Project identifies itself in the very general context of nanosciences in society discussion. It focuses, in particular on the contribution, often disregarded by non-specialists, of chemistry to nanoscience. The OpenLab Project aims to involve contemporary art in its widest forms: aid to expression, knowledge transfer and catalyst towards debate. The free access to scientific laboratories, hence the name OpenLab, is a major point and it means a will to communicate and a desire for transparency. This approach will allows a more effective communicate on such a complex and controversial topic. From the perspective of artistic creation, this project offers a significant number of new opportunities for artists in the field of chemistry and in their relationship to nanoscience.

Being organized in the framework of the International Year of Chemistry 2011, OpenLab is an innovative project at the intersection between contemporary art and nanoscience. OpenLab allowed six contemporary artists to access four research laboratories of the CNRS (French National Scientific Research Council), specialized in chemistry and nanoscience. The project is based on the reciprocal exchange of experience and knowledge between scientists and artists.

Developed in 2010 after a unique collaboration between a researcher in chemistry and an art critic, the OpenLab Project, in collaboration with the CNRS, Nanosciences Ile-de-France, Université Pierre et Marie Curie, Collège de France anf the Centre des Arts in Enghien-les-Bains, produced six new artworks / experiences that will be on display from September 23, 2011 until December 16, 2011 at the Centre des Arts d'Enghien-les-Bains.

The opening will take place September 22, 2011 at 19h, Centre des Arts, Enghien-les-Bains.
