On April 5th, 2011, Lake-Sumter Community College South Lake Branch Chem. Depart. presents a celebration of IYC for its students, faculty, and staff. Participants will enjoy eight worlds of chemistry through hands on experiments, demonstrations, and food. All worlds show the importance of chemistry in everyday life.
On April 5th, the Chemistry Department at the South Lake Branch of Lake-Sumter Community College will present "LSCC Celebrates IYC." The celebration will be a day long event where the chemistry students of the campus will present to their peers and the faculty and staff hands on experiments, demonstrations, and learning stations. The event will be divided into eight worlds of chemistry, and each participant will move through the event with a passport in hand. At each world, participants will either watch a demonstration, perform an experiment, watch a video, do some taste testing, or some or all of these activities. In each case, the goal of each world of chemistry is to show the participants that chemistry is a daily part of everyone's life. Participants can even take home the results of their experiments in some worlds! At the end of their journey, participants will learn about the exciting careers available through the study of chemistry. Refreshments and prizes will be provided. This is a wonderful way to celebrate IYC for several reasons. Three important reasons are as follows: First, it allows the students taking chemistry on the college campus to become involved in an activity outside the classroom. Second, the students themselves learn why chemistry is important beyond the textbook, and they learn how to express that message to others. Third that very important message is presented to students by students.
