One day workshop on Feb 12, 2011 for high school and college teachers covering frontier areas of chemistry today. Lectures by scientists from the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research and lab visits.
Over the past few decades, advances in synthetic techniques, new analytical methods and the development of novel materials have revolutionized Chemistry. Increasingly the chemical sciences have become interdisciplinary in nature and Chemistry today has strong overlaps with various scientific disciplines including physics, biology, medicine and mathematics. This has naturally led to a multitude of career options available to students with a chemistry degree.
In the International Year of Chemistry the Department of Chemical Sciences (DCS) and the Science Popularisation and Public Outreach Committee(SPPOC) at TIFR would like to bring together college teachers in Chemistry for a one-day focused workshop to convey the new trends in Chemistry today.
Over the years, TIFR has had an outstanding research programme in frontier areas of Chemical Sciences. Today the faculty works in topics ranging from NMR, materials chemistry, Bio-photonics and Bio-inorganic to ultrafast vibrational spectroscopy and molecular imaging techniques.
Format: The workshop will have lectures on various topics in chemistry along with a special session on innovative experiments in Chemistry for college level. Timetable of the workshop will be communicated soon.
The workshop is open to all junior and senior College teachers. High-school science teachers with a strong interest in Chemistry are also encouraged to attend.
Registration Fee: A token registration fee of Rs. 100/- is being charged. This should be paid by cheque on or before January 28, 2011. The cheque should be drawn in favour of TIFR, Mumbai and sent to Secretary, Public Outreach, TIFR, Homi Bhabha Road, Colaba, Mumbai 400005. Seats are limited.
