Activity by Chris Ciolli   |   added on Jan 25, 2011   |   United States Official_iyc_logo

Sponsor(s): American Chemical Society, Partners in Science Excellence, Perry (Lake County, Ohio) Local School District, The Lubrizol Corporation

The activity is a six week Science Enrichment Program for grades 3 - 8 cognitively-gifted students focusing each week on one of the following areas of chemistry: organic, analytical, inorganic, physical, biochemistry, and polymer/materials science.

The activity is a six week Science Enrichment Program for 38 grades 3 – 8 cognitively-gifted students in the Perry (Lake County, Ohio) Local School District focusing each week on one of the following areas of chemistry: organic, analytical, inorganic, physical, biochemistry, and polymer chemistry/materials science.  Students meet once per week for 2 hours under the instruction of Dr. Chris Ciolli, a professional chemist, and Mrs. Kathleen Ciolli, a grades 1 – 8 certified teacher.  Additionally, the Perry Local School District provides facilities and two staff members to assist with the program.  Each program session involves approximately 30 minutes of lecture and discussion followed by 1.5 hours hands-on activities based on the topic covered.  The activity is supported by the Northeastern Ohio ACS Local Section via a Bridging the Gap Nano-Grant for Celebrating IYC 2011 and Partners in Science Excellence via a competitive grant awarded to Mrs. Ciolli.  Additionally, the Lubrizol Corporation provides lab supplies for the program.  This program is a great way to celebrate IYC 2011 because the hands-on activities will help increase the students' awareness, understanding, and interest in chemistry.

Topic: chemistry, celebrating chemistry, chemistry education, educational materials, hands-on activities, demonstrations Audience: students, educators, teachers, school children

Participants in the Science Enrichment Program: Chemistry showed great gains in their knowledge of chemistry.  Our 18 students in grades 3-5 averaged a 49% improvement from their pre-test to post-test scores.  Our 20 students in grades 6-8 averaged a 29% improvement from their pre-test to post-test scores.  All assessments were geared to the appropriate grade levels.  Overall, the students showed a 38% gain in their knowledge of the fields of chemistry.
