Super Science Saturday: Celebrating Chemistry – Past, Present, Future

This event will provide educational activities and opportunities for students and their families to experience the science of chemistry. These activities will focus on understanding the foundational elements of pure chemistry, its connections with the other sciences and our culture, and the career opportunities available.
In celebration of the International Year of Chemistry 2011 and Grand Valley State University’s (GVSU) 50th Anniversary, the Regional Math and Science Center and the Chemistry Department at GVSU will be hosting Super Science Saturday: Celebrating Chemistry – Past, Present, Future, a science extravaganza for the West Michigan community. This event, on Saturday, January 29, 2011, will provide educational activities and opportunities for students and their families to experience the science of chemistry. These activities will focus on understanding the foundational elements of pure chemistry, its significant connections and overlaps both with other sciences and its interaction with our culture, and the career opportunities available through the study of chemistry. Also celebrated will be the 100th anniversary of the Nobel Prize awarded to Madame Marie Curie and the benefits of international scientific collaboration. These experiences will include:
· Large group demonstration by GVSU science faculty and/or guest presenters
· Hands-on activities in laboratories and/or classrooms provided by GVSU science, mathematics, engineering, history, geography, and arts faculty, professors from other colleges and universities in our region, pre-service teachers, community science-related organizations, and area business/industry
· Invited guest speakers
· Free-standing and poster displays
· Connection with the international opening events in Paris occurring on the same day
The event will be held during the day on the campus of Grand Valley State University in Allendale, Michigan, USA.
