We are pleased to announce the NSW Chief Scientist - Prof  O'Kane has accepted our invitation to attend also.   This will be a local pre-launch event designed to focus attention towards the official start of IYC one week later for the UNESCO / IUPAC launch. The Official International Launch Ceremony for IYC 2011 will take place at UNESCO World Headquarters in Paris on 27-28 January 2011, under the aegis of the UN, UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation), and the IUPAC (International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry). Women Sharing a Chemical Moment in Time is an IYC activity created by IUPAC to gather chemistry women together worldwide to proliferate a worldwide networking meeting while also reinvigorating local chemistry communities. By capturing shared moments together using Skype / Twitter / social networking tools, we create a global chemical “handshake” Our events celebrate Women and Chemical Achievements, highlighting women’s contributions to chemical discoveries that benefit humankind. Celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Mme. Curie Nobel Prize and the 100th anniversary of the founding of the International Association of Chemical Societies. The year 2011 marks the one-hundredth anniversary of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry awarded to Marie Sklodowska Curie, recognizing her discovery of the elements radium and polonium. Dr. Curie’s achievements continue to inspire students, especially women, to pursue careers in chemistry. The year 2011 also marks the one-hundredth anniversary of the founding in Paris of the International Association of Chemical Societies to address the need for international cooperation among chemists and international standardization of nomenclature, atomic weights, physical constants, and scientific communication.
Topic: celebrating chemistry, networking Audience: students, professional chemists, industrial chemists, and all interested persons, women chemists
