Symposium was held to encourage the interest of young people in Chemistry. Therefore , during the symposium efforts were made to show how to enhance the capacity of Chemical Education in Ethiopia.
The Symposium took place on September 24th, 2011 at the Department of Geochemistry, Johannes Gutenberg University , Mainz , Germany. The Symposium held was divided into three sessions.
1) Chemical Education / Didactics of Chemistry
2) Strategies to enhance the Chemical Education and efforts to obtain Financial and Technical support for Research and Teaching purposes for Ethiopian Universities
3) Speeches given by previous Lecturer and Professors about the Ethiopian Universities with a title " Experiences of the Past"
Didactic of Chemistry and Encouragement of Young People to Study Chemistry
Chemistry Didactic was the high light of the Symposium dealing with the following topics:
a) Enhancing Chemistry Lectures by applying Chemical Modelling
b) Curriculum for Chemistry Teachers ( Chemical Didactic)
c) Experiments and Models especially prepared for High School Teachers
d) Selected Chemistry Experiments for Secondary Schools
e) Chemistry Didactic for PhD Students at Addis Ababa University
f) Application of Chemistry and Chemical Technology in the fields of Emerging Technologies, like Nano Technology, Hydrogen Technology, Li-Batteries, Solar Cells ( Solar Energy)
g) Developing concepts and evaluating selected and low cost experiments useful for Medical, Environmental, and Technological advancements of Ethiopia. How to asses such experiments and make their results public.
h) Improving Chemistry Lectures by showing various phenomena of the Subject by introducing Chemical Structures, Chemical Formulas. This was divided into three basic theories.
> Macro ( see, touch, smell)
> Sub-Macro ( atoms, ions, molecules, chemical structures)
> Represent ( symbols, formulas, reaction mechanisms, stiochiometry, tables and graphs)
To make these theories more understandable, Neutralization Reaction Mechanism and the Periodic Table of the Elements were presented to show the Metal-Ligand interactions.
i) Basic concepts of Teaching , Inorganic, Organic, Physical Chemistry and selected Experiments in these Chemistry Fields.
j) The application of Models and Chemical Symbols to present Molecular Structures and the depicting of Formula in Stereochemistry, Theoretical Chemistry and Reaction Mechanisms, inorder to make Chemistry more understandable easy interpretable in the Schools and Universities.

a) Cooperation of the Diaspora Ethiopian Scientists with Chemists in Ethiopia
b) Free Online Chemistry Journals,Printed Scientific Magazines, Books for Ethiopian Universities
c) Development of Remote Chemistry Lectures / Web-based Chemistry Education in Ethiopia
d) Instruments Technology , development of Small Scale Laboratory Equipments and Instruments (e.g.Mobile pH-Meter)
e) TV and Radio Program within Ethiopia to disseminate Chemistry Education
f) Chemistry -- Indsutry collaboration
g) Graduate Program
h) Sustainable Funding for Research
i) Introducing Ethiopian Chemistry within Africa and Worldwide
j) Cooperation between Departments of Chemistry of Foreign Universities and Chemistry Departments of the Ethiopian Universities
k) Innovative and Effective Laboratory Schedules in Chemistry Education
l) Establising and Supporting Chemistry Socities throughout Ethiopia
m) The role of Diaspora Ethiopian Chemists as well as the Alumni Associations in supporting Chemical Education in Schools, Vocational Schools, Colleges, and Universities in Ethiopia
Speakers at the Symposium
Engineer Ahmed Abdulwahab, a former lecturer at the Department of Electrical Engineering of the Addis Ababa University, with several years teaching experiences. During the Symposium he focused on his previous years at the Electrical Engineering Department of the Addis Ababa University, mentioning the vast topics related to Education , Research, and Degree Programs. Also the requirements to obtain Degree after nearly 4 years course of study . As Executive Member of the Ethiopian Medical, Engineering and Natural Science Society , basesd in Germany, he explained which specific engagements the Professional Society requires , in order to intensify its relationship with Engineers and Scientists in Ethiopia. Engineer Ahmed Abdulwahab is employed at the Engineering Office , that has the assignment to Develop and implement various Engineering Projects in Darmstadt.
Professor Joachim Kinkel of the Georg-Simon Ohm University , in Nurenberg , Germany was a former Professor at the Department of Chemistry of the Adama University, Adama, Ethiopia. At the Symposium Professor Kinkel gave speech about his experiences he gain during his Research and Teaching years at Adama. Further more, he mentioned strategies how to improve the standard of the new University Adama in Scientific, Technological, and Economical fields.
Hans Friedrich studied Chemistry and graduated as Chemistry Teacher from the Department of Chemistry Education, Darmstadt University, Darmstadt, Germany. Mr. Friedrich belongs to the Executive Committee of the Ethiopian Medical , Engineering and Natural Science Society, Germany.
He participated in the symposium and addressed the Audience how far Professional Societies like, the Ethiopian Medical, Engineering and Natural Science Society in Germany, (EMENSSG) could be beneficial for the Progress of Ethiopia. Mr. Friedrich explained ways and methods and mentioned priorities to be done and showed various assignments of the Ethiopian Professional Society in Germany, that could be assessed by identifying the long term and the short term objectives. Mr. Friedrich Works for Scientific Publishing Service and Hardware and Software Interface Technology at Private Sector.
Hans- Dieter Barke
Hans- Dieter Barke is a Professor at the Wilhelm-Westfalen University, Muenster, Germany. He Lectures at the Department of Chemical Education/ Chemistry Didactic . He is Co-Author of Chemistry Book " Essentional of Chemical Education" and Author of several papers in various Chemistry Journals. Professor Barke has excellent cooperation with Addis Ababa University and has supervised Ethiopian PhD Students at his Department , who hold currently Senior Lecturer and Associate Professorship positions at the Ethiopian Universities and Teacher Training Colleges. Furter more, Professor Barke was a visiting Professor and Keynote Speaker during the IYC celebration in February 2011 at the Department of Chemistry , Addis Ababa University, Addis Ababa Ethiopia. Professor Barkes' Symposium participation is shown under the Tite " Didactic of Chemistry " above.
Gedion Getahun is a Nuclear and Radioanalytical Chemist with Environmental Science background. He holds Associate Professorship ( Hochschuldozent) position in Mainz. Dr. Getahun is engaged in Chemistry Education and supervises PhD Students at the Addis Ababa University. He is Member of the Executive Committee of the Ethiopian Medical , Engineering and Natural Science Society, Germany. Besides, he is Author and Co-Author of several papers in Environmental and Radiochemistry fields published in Chemistry Journals. Dr.Getahuns' speech during the Symposium is mentioned under the title " Strategies "
