Sinhala, Tamil, and English School Essay/Arts/Poster Competition - ‘chemistry and our daily life'

IYC 2011 National Secretariat (Sri Lanka) has planned to conduct a School Essay/Arts/Poster competition with a view to increasing the enthusiasm and awareness of chemistry in day to life, of the people. The consent of the Ministry of Education, Sri Lanka has been obtained. The dates are yet to be finalized.



The United Nations has declared 2011 the International Year of Chemistry. The International Year of Chemistry celebrates the achievements of chemistry and its contributions to the well-being of humankind under the unifying theme, ‘Chemistry—Our Life, Our Future’.

The International Year of Chemistry 2011 aims to: increase public appreciation of chemistry in meeting world needs; increase the interest of young people in chemistry; generate enthusiasm for the creative future of chemistry and; celebrate the 100th anniversary of Madame Marie Curie’s Nobel Prize for Chemistry and the founding of the International Association of Chemical Societies. Sri Lanka inaugurated the IYC 2011 on 27th January 2011 at Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall (BMICH) in Colombo.

The Institute of Chemistry Ceylon in its capacity as the National Adhering Organization for IYC 2011 through its IYC 2011 Secretariat plays the key role in making this important event a success in Sri Lanka, with the cooperation of related state and private sector institutions, educational organizations and private sector industrialists. The Secretariat established for this purpose by Institute has organized a series of events with a view to achieving the objectives and goals of the IYC 2011 with the cooperation of related organizations.

The objective of this competition is creation of awareness of the importance of chemistry in the daily life, contribution of chemistry to the well being of the society and its importance in the national development.


The creations should be based on the theme ‘chemistry and our daily life’. The competitions will be held in all the 3 media, Sinhala/ Tamil/ English, as follows:

1.      Essay competition

2.      Art competition

3.      Poster Competition

The competition will be held on the basis of Junior Level and Senior level. Up to Grade 8 will be considered as Junior Level while Grade 9 and above will be considered as Senior level.


The number of words should not be more then 350. Both Junior and Senior level students may participate. One person can send only one essay under the theme.


Competitors are allowed to use any kind of paper (17”x23”) or drawing media. Applicants are required to place their signature with the date on the reverse of their creations to the effect that they are their own creations. Both Junior and Senior level students may participate. One person can send only one creation under the theme.


Posters should be 17”x23” size and any colours preferred by the student can be used. Applicants are required to place their signature with the date on the reverse of their creations to the effect that they are their own creations. Both Junior and Senior level students may participate. One person can send only one poster under the theme.


Principals should certify on the reverse of such creations that the competitors are either Junior or Senior Level by placing their signature and date stamp. Competitors are requested to send the completed coupon in this leaflet along with their creations.


Cash prizes and certificates and medals will be awarded to the Provincial Level best Essay/Art/ Poster  creations as follows:


First price:         Rs. 5,000

Second prize:   Rs. 3,000

Third Prize:      Rs. 2,000



First price:         Rs. 7,500

Second prize:   Rs. 5,000

Third Prize:      Rs. 3,500


First three zonal level winners (Essay/Art/Poster) of Junior Level & Senior Level of each Educational Zone will be awarded certificates.


1.The selection of the first three Essay/Arts/Poster creations (Junior and Senior)  at each school level will be done by the School Science Teachers.

2. The three selected Essay/Arts/Poster creations (Junior and Senior) along with the completed coupons will be sent by the Principal of each school to the National Secretariat of the Institute of Chemistry Ceylon at the following address to receive on or before (TO BE FINALIZED). The creations may also be hand delivered.

3. The Provincial level / Zonal Level best Essay/Art/Poster creations will be selected by the Institute of Chemistry Ceylon.

4. Final selection will be done by a panel of judges competent in the subject. The decision of the judges will be considered final. The ownership of all successful creations will be vested with the National Secretariat, Institute of Chemistry Ceylon.

Prizes and certificates will be awarded to the winners at the IYC 2011 Closing Ceremony scheduled to be held at the Institute of Chemistry Ceylon, Welikada, Rajagiriya in January 2012. The exact date and time of the Closing Ceremony will be informed in due course.
