Chemistry of Cosmetics is a unique program for the adult public to open people's minds to thinking about chemistry in unexpected ways. This continues Illinois Science Council's series of programs celebrating the International Year of Chemistry. The series began with programs on Beer, Whiskey and Chocolate, and upcoming programs on Honey and Coffee. A professor of chemistry and a cosmetic chemist will explain the chemical content and properties of personal care products and direct people in conducting experiments.
This unique workshop, Chemistry of Cosmetics, will be led Perry Romanowski, cosmetic chemist and author of Can You Get Hooked on Lip Balm?* and Dr. Shelby Hatch, chemistry faculty at Northwestern University.
Folks, this isn't just for ladies who wear make-up. It's for anyone who bothers to bathe regularly (hopefully, all of you) or needs to (definitely all of you). It's for anyone who ever put a product on his/her body or hair to make themselves look better or smell better. As we humans are social beings - and vain creatures - that's all of us.
Memorizing the periodic table in high school didn't do it, but knowledge of chemistry can, in fact make you prettier (avoid rashes) and richer (avoid overpriced products). Cosmetics means all personal care products. Come for an enlightening evening where you'll get the inside chemical scoop on the lotions, potions and products that clutter our bathrooms. You'll get to test some things out yourself too!
- Are natural or organic products better for my skin?
- Is wearing makeup bad for me?
- Are more expensive products worth the price?
- There are thousands of shampoo choices - what works best?
- And the eternal mystery Einstein couldn't answer... Can I get hooked on lip balm?
