Academia Europaea is the European Academy of sciences, humanities and arts. This conference is being held under the auspices of the International Year of Chemistry; it will highlight the links between chemistry, the sciences and society.
This event brings together over 2,300 members from 45 countries, under the theme "Chemistry, Science, Culture and Society in the making of Europe". The aim is to raise awareness of science, particularly chemistry, to a broad audience (social sciences, humanities, general public, young people).
The organizers will also seek to educate teachers of chemistry (in particular in high schools and preparatory classes for higher education), especially the chemistry that surrounds everyone daily.
The event will have three components:
i) the contribution of natural sciences, including mathematics, physics and biology, to chemistry and vice versa;
ii) a session on "chemistry in the service of humanity or war" that links the natural sciences and social sciences; and
iii) a session on "Chemistry and knowledge" describing the contributions of chemistry to the philosophical, literary, epistemological and aesthetic development of civilization.
The event will offer the audience an attractive image of chemistry "in action" in areas such as chemicals and food; chemicals, reactions and color chemistry; magnetism; as well as chemistry and perfume. In each case, a renowned expert will present the topic with experiments to appeal to the general public.
