UBC Chemistry Celebrates IYC with the Girl Guides of Canada: Chemistry - Beyond the Magic

Activity by Angela Crane   |   added on Sep 20, 2011   |   Canada Official_iyc_logo

UBC Chemistry invites members of the West Point Grey Girl Guide District to join their IYC 2011 celebrations. With presentations, demonstrations and liquid nitrogen ice-cream this is sure to be a great day of chemistry for girls of all ages!

Where will you be when the magic gets explained? UBC Chemistry invites all members of the West Point Grey Girl Guide district and their families to the University to discover the magic behind everyday chemical phenomena. The day starts at 10am, with a welcome message from the head of the UBC Chemistry Department, Dr. Mike Fryzuk. This leads into rotating themed presentations and demonstrations on a variety of topics including thermodynamics, kinetics, organic chemistry, and polymers. During a scheduled lunch break families will be treated to a chemist's favourite confectionary - liquid nitrogen ice-cream. The event wraps up with a small closing ceremony, where girls will receive a custom made commemorative crest.

This event has been planned by the UBC Chemistry Outreach Committee, and runs solely on a volunteer basis. Volunteers include emeritus faculty, research faculty, instructors, staff, graduate students, and undergraduate students who will be involved as presenters, demonstrators, tour guides and general ambassadors for chemists around the world.

Because of the diversity of the demonstrations being performed, as well as the enthusiasm of our volunteers from various levels of expertise, we believe that this event is ideal for an all ages audience. We fully expect to overcome the activation barrier for kick-starting an interest in chemistry in today's youth and the general public - particularly in girls where the 'woman in science' stereotype is ever-present.

We believe we have embodied the mandate of  IYC  - celebrating the achievements of chemistry and it's contributions to the well-being of human kind.
