A free, college-level, inter-laboratory class quiz competition open to students of the University of the Philippines - Los BaƱos currently taking up CHEM 16.1 (General Chemistry I Laboratory). The contest is centered on the applications of Chemistry and themed: "Zooming the Advancement of Pharmaceutical Nanotechnology".

  The UPLB Chemical Society, a duly recognized academic organization in the University of the Philippines - Los Baños, will once more be sponsoring one of its annual quiz competition: The UPLB CHEM 16.1 Inter-Laboratory Quiz Contest 2011. This quiz contest is free and is open to all bona fide students of the university taking up the two-unit course of CHEM 16.1 (General Chemistry I Laboratory). In this year, the quiz contest is focused on the theme: "Zooming the Advancements of Pharmaceutical Nanotechnology".

   Pharmaceutical nanotechnology is a branch that has been developed through the application of nanotechnology in the field of pharmacy, which aims to enhance the drug delivery and efficacy of drugs. In this branch of nanotechnology, chemistry is employed through explorations of the concepts of its fields such as analytical, organic, inorganic, physical and biochemistry. Pharmaceutical nanotechnology is thus a field which is worth exploring since it is an emerging branch of science for this milieu. At present times, pharmaceutical products, with and without the incorporation of nanotechnology, are mostly being imported by the Philippines from developed countries since research about pharmaceutical nanotechnology in the Philippines is still under development. For the past eight years, the Philippines is eyeing to further develop the research in this field to enhance the technological aspect of the country. It is then appropriate to introduce and enourage interest to the future researchers of our country in this field of nanotechnology so as they may generate enthusiasm for the creative future of chemistry as well as of pharmaceutical nanotechnology.

  Our objectives in this activity are:

      1. To introduce the field of pharmaceutical nanotechnology;
      2. To promote pharmaceutical nanotechnology as a promising endeavor for the future;
      3. To stimulate interest in the chemistry and its applications among the future reseachers; and
      4. To appreciate the advancements in pharmacy due to nanotechnology.

  The Elimination Phase of the quiz contest will start 7:15 PM on August 24, 2011 at Multi-purpose Hall 1 and Multi-purpose Hall 2 of the College of Arts and Sciences - Annex 2 Building. The Final Phase will be on August 25, 2011 (7:15 PM) at the Lecture Hall A of the Physical Sciences Building. The contest is FREE. Prizes, gift packs, medals and certificates also await the winners.

   Moreover, an exhibit about Pharmaceutical Nanotechnology and Chemistry will be showcased at Physical Sciences Annex Lobby from August 16, 2011 until August 26, 2011.
