This is an exposition dedicated to the Practices of Chemical Activity and the Laboratory of Chemistry in the Past and in Our Days. Two recostructions of the typical Laboratory of Chemistry at the end of the 1800th and a modern Laboratory will be the contest of several hands-on activities inside the Museum.
Every year, the 'Museo di Storia Naturale' in Rosignano Solvay (Livorno - Italy) organizes an Educational Scientific Exposition specifically thought for children and primary/secondary Schools students.
This periodic event usually takes place in November inside the Museum building under the Organization of the "Associazione della Natura Rosignano".
This year, in view of the Celebration of the Chemical Science, we have proposed to dedicate this one-month activity to Chemistry and in particular to the "practices of chemistry".
Two Laboratories of Chemistry, one typical of the end of the 1800th and the other one typical of nowadays, will be reproduced inside the Museum main area. Children and students will have the opportunity to see how the practices, objects and tools changed during the past two centuries. In the other rooms of the Museum, children could touch old and new tools and make some simple experiments under the guide of expecialists and chemical researchers.
"Le Pratiche della Chimica ieri e oggi" is an Educational Activity (i.e. "Mostra Didattica") which bases on the considerations of a recent essay proposed by E. Eastes (see "From primary school to university: the main obstacles to the comprehension of chemistry", Abstract at “Public Images of Chemistry in the twentieth century”, Paris, 17th-18th September 2004) :
“Which child does not dream of a chemistry kit or of a real chemist’s classroom visit? Who never tried, in the secrecy provided by temporary parental absence, to mix food or household chemicals in order to transform them, sometimes even harboring the secret desire to see them ‘blow up’?”
In this sense, children, students and their teachers will have an unique opportunity to know and play with Chemistry throughout several Activities and Hands-on exibits.
The Exposition will start at the beginning of November 2011 and it will be open until the end of December. School classes could visit the Museum during the morning according to the calendar of Activities.
During this period there will be spacial events, such as conferences and lab activities. Dates and program will be available soon.
