The University of Michigan-Flint Chemistry Club will be hosting its first Demo Academy. This workshop is for fifth grade teachers in the GISD and limited to 15 registered participants. It will be held on May 19, 2011, 12:30-3:30.
Have you ever seen a cool science demo on UTube and weren’t sure how to do it or how much work it was going to take to use in your classroom? Then the UM-Flint Demo Academy is for you. During this hands-on workshop, speakers will present a variety of safe and affordable activities that can be used in the classroom as demonstrations or hands on activities. The chemical theory behind why each demo works will be discussed as well as approaches to how you may explain the concepts to students at different levels. The teachers will have the opportunity to try out the activities for themselves during the event. The speakers will also describe the advanced preparation required for each activity as well as any problems that may arise and how to correct them. The overall goal of the workshop is to provide the teacher with engaging activities to help them demonstrate the fun and excitement of chemistry to students of varying ages.
