How Groups of Chemical Compounds Have Influenced the Course of Human HistoryActivity by Gian maria Beone | added on Apr 04, 2011 | Italy
Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore of Piacenza (Faculty of Agriculture) wants to propose to local secondary schools an initiative to make students feel interest in agricultural chemistry. Students will have to investigate some natural substances that have profoundly influenced the development of our society.
Humanity has always evolved and grown in a close relationship with Earth minerals and plants, and consequently with natural inorganic and organic substances. Man has slowly learned to recognize the molecular diversity existing in nature. It was only in the 19th century that the understanding and awareness of the molecular composition of matter around us gradually began to consolidate. The structural theory of organic molecules represent one of the fundamental pillars of stereochemistry of tetrahedral carbon. In particular, organic Chemistry have had an impact on its development and history.
For this reason, we identified the different classes of natural substances we deem have contributed to the development of modern society. To understand the importance of chemistry in our everyday life, which is often forgotten or not understood, students will study these natural substances under different aspects: chemical, historical, economic, social and environmental. The selected substances are somehow related to agriculture and nutrition and therefore inextricably linked to the molecular components of plants, insects, animals, food and feed.
The students will present their work as poster or PowerPoint presentation at the University on a day in October (date to be planned).
