Department of Chemistry, GC University Lahore, Pakistan will organize the International Workshop on Crystallography and Nanomaterials. Crystallography is an important technique used for structural determination of various kinds of molecules and nanomaterials.
After successfull organization of 1st national workshop on crystallography, Department of Chemistry, GC University Lahore, Pakistan are going to organize “International Workshop on Crystallography and Nanomaterials” (IWCN )in connection with celebration of International Year of Chemistry 2011 from 19-21 October 2011.
GC University Lahore has taken also a step to establish Pakistan Association of Crystallography (PAC) with support from International Union of Crystallography (IUCr). Some grant has been sanctioned by the IUCr which would be utilized to sponsor the young scientists to participate in the workshop and meeting. The first meeting will be on 21 October 2011.
Crystallography is the science of crystal formation and structure used for structural determination of various kinds of molecules while Nanotechnology is another cutting-edge technology dealing with synthesis, characterization and application of materials at nano-scale. There are very few people are trained in these areas in our country. We are working on the synthesis and applications of nanomaterials and the Department of Chemistry has facility to characterize the materials by using Single Crystal X-Ray Diffractometer.
The workshop will cover basic theory and hands-on experience on Single Crystal X-Ray Diffractrometer facility available in our department as well as synthesis, characterization and applications of nanomaterials . The resources persons of the workshop will be renowned crystallographers of the country and from outside.
List of topics to be covered:
Generation of XRD-Single crystal XRD
Crystal growth
Crystal structure and Physical properties
Symmetry and space group determination
Practical aspects in data collection and processing
Structure solution and refinement
Protein Crystallography
Crystallography in Natural products
Nanomaterials (Synthesis, Characterization and Applications)
Call for abstract (oral/poster) are being called and will be received till 20 August 2011, Please use Application form for the grant for young scientist award and abstract submission.Application form for the grant for young scientist award is available at the right side of link.
Poster/oral presentation is compulsory for the grant/young scientist award applications. Size of poster should be 3(width) X 5(height)

International Workshop on Crystallography and Nanomaterials ended at GCU Lahore with the establishment of Pakistan Association of Crystallography
International Workshop on Crystallography and Nanomaterials ended on 21 October 2011 at the Department of Chemistry, Government College University Lahore.
In four technical sessions, eight invited speakers from different institutions of Pakistan and abroad gave presentations on Crystallography and Nanomaterials. Mirza Abdul Rashid from Government College of Science gave presentation on point symmetry and types of crystal lattice while Dr. Jamil Ahmad, visiting senior professor of GCU Chemistry Department talked about Symmetry. In the second session Mr. Maqsood Ahmed from Nancy University, France presented experimental charge density analysis and Dr. Ahmed Akrem Attari from Bahauddin Zakariya University Multan talked on protein x-ray crystallography. Dr. Muhammad Nawaz Tahir from University of Sargodha and Dr. Muhammad Nadeem Arshad, gave demo on structure solution and refinement in the third session. The fourth technical session was held on nanomaterials in which Dr. Muhammad Akhyar Farrukh from GC University Lahore gave lecture on introduction to nanomaterials: their synthesis applications and characterization by XRD and other microscopic techniques while Engr. Muhammad Irfan from PCSIR Labs. Complex Lahore presented topographical and mechanical characteristics of thin films.
The Organizer and Ravian Forensic Society Advisor Dr. Muhammad Akhyar Farrukh thanked the International Year of Chemistry (IYC) panel for declaration of this three-day workshop as an official event of the International Year of Chemistry 2011 and International Union of Crystallography for the sponsorship of the entire activity.
To promote the research in crystallography in Pakistan, a new national level body namely “Pakistan Association of Crystallography” (PAC) has been established at GC University Lahore and its first meeting and general assembly was held on 21st October 2011. More than 150 members were present representing different institutions of Pakistan. The members actively took part in the debate on the constitution of PAC led by Dr. M. Akhyar Farrukh. The executive members elected by the general assembly are Dr. Islam Ullah Khan as President, Dr. Muhammad Nawaz Tahir as Vice President, Mr. Maqsood Ahmed as General Secretary, Dr. Muhammad Akhyar Farrukh as Treasurer and Dr. Ahmed Akrem Attari as an ordinary executive member. The council will call applications for the nominations for Joint Secretary and 4 ordinary members, one from each province, to give equal representation around the country.
At the end Dr. Islam Ullah Khan, chairperson, Department of Chemistry gave cash prizes to the first, second and third positions in poster competition as well as cash awards to all invited speakers. All members were honored with the certificates of participation.
