Grades 10 to 12 students in southern Alberta will be encouraged to write a short essay about what they see as chemistry in action in their daily life. This essay contest will be organized by the Chemistry and Biochemistry department at the University of Lethbridge.
Chemistry is in action every moment and everywhere in our daily life. As high school students who are freshly introduced to the chemistry science, recognizing the chemistry around them and within them is a great way to reinforce their learning and arouse their curiosity for further exploration. This activity is part of the IYC celebration activities planned at the University of Lethbridge. We plan to send out invitations to all high schools in Southern Alberta in September 2011. The essay contest will end sometime in November 2011. Scholarships will be awarded to three top essays. This could be the first of an annual event that brings high school teachers and students in our community together to celebrate the importance of chemistry in our life. It is a great way to celebrate IYC, and further more, a great timing to initiate an annual community event that has chemistry front and center.
