Celebrating IYC at Vadamaradchy, Point Pedro, Northern Province, Sri Lanka

The International Year of Chemistry 2011 was celebrated on a grand scale by the Zonal Education Department of Vadamaradchy on 24 June 2011 at J/Methodist Girls School, Point Pedro. Vadamaradchy Education Zone was the first to organize IYC -2011 celebrations in the Northern Province of Sri Lanka.

The International Year of Chemistry 2011 was celebrated on a grand scale by the Zonal Education Department of Vadamaradchy on 24 June 2011 at J/Methodist Girls School, Point Pedro. Vadamaradchy. Education Zone was the first to organize IYC -2011 celebrations in the Northern Province of Sri Lanka. 

All the science (chemistry) teachers and A/L science students (chemistry) gathered at the function. The number of participants were more than 300. Even people from the adjoining ares who are interested in chemistry attended the function. Deputy Director of Education Mr. S.Udayakumar represented the Zonal Director of Education, Mr. V.Selvarajah  who graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. The function was presided by Mrs. Rohini Karuneswaran (Asst Director of Education, Science). 

The guest speakers were:

Dr. S. Mangaleswaran, General Medical Practitioner from Kandy.

Dr. N. Sivapalan, Department of Chemistry, University of Jaffna.

Mr.K.Natanasabapathy, Institute of Chemistry Ceylon.

Manager Hatton National Bank, Nelliady.

Manager Hatton National Bank, Point Pedro.

Speech by the Chief Guest.

Hatton National Bank Nelliaddy Branch and Point Pedro Branch sponsored the function. A quiz contest on chemistry was conducted for A/L students. J/Hartley College, Point Pedro was the winner and J/Methodist Girls High School, Point Pedro was the runner up in the competition.

Chemistry projects were presented by the Students. Trophies were awarded to the winning team and the runner up team and to the child who scored the highest points.

The interest shown by the school students and the general public in Sri Lanka on IYC 2011 activities is considerable due to the public enthusiasm created through the  IYC 2011 inauguration (conducted  on 27th January 2011) and the subsequent Educational Exhibition and Trade Fair CHEMEX 2011 (conducted from 27th-30th January 2011)  at the Bandaranaike Memmorial International Conference Hall  (BMICH) in Colombo, Sri Lanka.

Chemistry Day programmes and Student's Essay /Arts Competitions have also been scheduled to be implemented during the year, by the National Secretariat (Sri Lanka) IYC 2011.
