Co-workers from the Laboratory for Food Chemistry, National Institute of Chemistry, Slovenia, and EN-FIST Centre of Excellence, Slovenia, are going to present a demonstration on the determination of sugars, stimulants, and colorants in soft drinks. The extraction of these compounds in various beverages (fruit juices, tea, cocoa, coffee, and energy drinks) and their determination by thin-layer chromatography (TLC) will be presented. With several experiments, which can also be implemented in school lessons, we are going to show a simple determination of the glucose, sucrose, fructose, caffeine, and certain colors. The experiments will drawl our attention to the concealed sources of sugar, stimulants and colorants, and their related health problems such as obesity, sugar and stimulant addiction, and allergies.
