Chem13 News Periodic Table Design Project

Teachers and educators worldwide can register their students, of any age, for this one-of-a-kind periodic table project combining art and science celebrating IYC. Visit www.chem13news.uwaterloo.ca for submission instructions and how to have your creative interpretation be part of the public art display, poster and website.

Chem13 News Periodic Table has chemistry students from around the world join together to create an original and imaginative version of the periodic table.  Teachers will be the contact and will register their classes for one elemental tile. Teachers at any course level are welcomed to have their classes participate.  Outreach will be through Chem13 News (a magazine designed for chemistry teachers) and its website along with the promotion at Chemical Education conferences. If you are a teacher of chemistry, you are encouraged to have your students get involved in this collaborative project.

 

--- UPDATE Dec 2011 --- The International Year of Chemistry (IYC) is coming to a close. To celebrate, Chem 13 News together with the University of Waterloo Chemistry Department and the Faculty of Science, Waterloo, Ontario, Canada encouraged chemistry educators and enthusiasts worldwide to adopt an element and artistically interpret that element. The project created a Periodic Table as a mosaic of science and art. See here on the right a small version of the final project poster. Thank you to all the teachers and students who participated in the collaborative Periodic Table project. Students from all Canadian provinces and territories, 20 US states and 14 countries researched, created and designed the elemental tiles. We would like to thank 3M Canada and the University of Waterloo for providing support to the project. We have more exciting plans for the project beyond the International Year of Chemistry. One goal is to have a large (25’ by 18’) wall mural display of the project on the University of Waterloo campus.  It also looks like we will have a IPad application of the project ready for download in the new year.

 You may be wondering where the final classroom-sized Periodic Table posters (36” by 27”) are displayed. The University of Waterloo has helped us mail out complimentary posters to all participants, all high schools in Canada and Chem 13 News readers. We have been celebrating the project by handing out complimentary Periodic Table posters at conferences during IYC: the 94th Canadian Society for Chemistry in Montreal, Quebec; Chem Ed 2011 in Kalamazoo, Michigan; American Chemical Society High School Day in Denver, Colorado; 61st Canadian Chemical Engineering, London, Ontario and the STAO conference (Science Teachers’ Association of Ontario) in Toronto, Ontario. Thanks to Chem Ed 2011 and STAO for giving us the opportunity to display our large travelling version of the Periodic Table Project.

I AM A CHEMISTRY TEACHER IN IRAN AND MY STUDENTS HAD A ELEMENTAL PEROJECT THROUGH THE EDUCATIONAL YEAR AND THEY HAVE MADE POSTERS ABOUT ELEMENTS AND THEN HAD A CONFERANCE ABOUT IT .I LEARNED MORE THROUGH THEIR CONFERANCE AND THEY HAVE EXCITED WHEN THEY KNOW CHEMISTRY ELEMENTS ROLE IN THEIR HEALTHS AND THEIR LIVES.I THANKS FOR YOUR BEAUTIFUL IDEA AND WANT TO SHARE.
