This activity aims to promote interesting chemistry principles in two ways: 1) demonstrations to Pre-K to 8th graders by my high school chemistry students; and 2) teacher-created webquests as classroom tools for instruction.
Chemistry Principles in Action
- Hands-On Activity to Share
In this event, my high school students will be engaged in demonstrations of chemistry principles using simple yet exciting and interesting hands-on activities to Pre-K-8th grader.
Their target audience will be the students from Tohatchi Elementary School (TES) and Tohatchi Middle School (TOM) . We are planning to start visiting elementary and middle school classes during the 3rd week of February 2011 upon approval of our request from the school principals.
Nobody has done this before in our area so we believe that this is the best way for us to promote and celebrate the International Year of Chemistry!
- Using Webquests to Celebrate the International Year of Chemistry
In this event, teachers from Pre-K to middle school will be taught how to create webquests as classroom tools for promoting chemistry principles that operate in human bodies and in everything around us. They will be taught first how to utilize the 4 areas in the school eChalk. Then I will teach them how to create links, upload images, and embed a video on a web page.
I am planning to conduct this training at least 2-3 times a week after school from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and to start on February 14, 2011.
It would be best to have the science teachers themselves create their own teaching materials that emphasize Chemistry Principles in Action since they have first-hand information on what interests their students in the classroom.
