Remarkable characteristics of Mr. Hettigedera are, his pleasing manners, ability to get on with anybody and the extreme dedication displayed in the tasks undertaken by him. On a special note, I would like to mention that being an energetic personality; he has contributed to the activities of the Institute with much dedication. He is a rare personality who finds the words ‘it is difficult or not possible’, totally alien. When he starts some work or a negotiation, ‘success’ is the key word and the ‘failures’ are not in his vocabulary. His attitude of positive approach towards various issues ultimately ending up with enormous success is surprising and unimaginable. This quality which is rear among most of us has undoubtedly elevated him to the present positions he is holding in various Institutions.

Mr. Hettigedera always advocates that the chemists must dedicate themselves to the advancement of chemistry and also see what effective role they should play in contributing the creative future of chemistry. Since they are armed with all necessary professionalism they should join hands together and make a consolidated effort for the well being of the people of the country. I have observed great quality of using his relationships developed with other agencies for the well being of the Institute, rather than for his personal gains, which is very rarely seen in the present days.

He has brought much, identity, honor and reputation to IChem C both nationally and internationally through IYC programmes. He has sacrificed his time, effort and even money in dealing with Institute’s matters. Mr. Hettigedera’s initiative and innovativeness in taking charge of IYC activities with great vigor and enthusiasm and providing honorary services to the Institute are highly commendable. He is indeed an example and role model for all CCS Graduate Chemists to emulate by not forgetting one’s academic parent.

Being a very loyal alumnus and member of the Institute he has involved himself in many varied activities throughout the past three decades. I wholeheartedly endorse the decision taken by the Academics Board of the College of Chemical Sciences and the Council of the Institute to recognize his services and conferring the Gold Medal on Mr. Hettigedera. I have great pleasure in presenting Mr. N.M.S.Hettigedera for rendering an unmatchable service and richly contributing to the overall advancement of Institute of Chemistry Ceylon.

I offer my heartiest congratulations.
