Fifteen personalities from politics, research, sports, gastronomy and the movie world take part in the Spanish IYC commemorative video report presenting their view on the contributions of Chemistry to the wellbeing of society.
Participating personalities in the video report “Año Internacional de la Quìmica 2011” present their view on Chemistry and the Chemical industry, for it’s industry who translates laboratory milestones to products that make our daily life easier and more comfortable. Testimonies relate how the chemical industry supplies products to virtually all industrial sectors, specially to those related to society progress (such as health, building, textile, transportation, hygiene, food or aerospace industries among others); its capital relation to the quality of life; its contribution to the generation of work and capital in Spain; and how Chemistry plays a role in their profession and in their daily activities.
Participating members on the Government side include Government Vice-President Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba, Education Minister Ángel Gabilondo, Science and Innovation Minister Cristina Garmendia and Industry Minister Miguel Sebastián. Keeping on the political side, taking part in the commemorative video report are also European parliamentarians Alejo Vidal-Quadras and Andrés Perelló and regional deputies Ana Pastor, María Teresa Rodríguez Barahona, Inmaculada Riera and Guillermo Bernabeu. Chemistry Scientific and Researcher Avelino Corma, awardwinner of the Spanish Chemistry Research and Innovation Gold Medal for the 2001-2010 Decade; worldwide famous chef Ferran Adrià, 2010 125cc World Champion Marc Márquez, actress Michelle Jenner and oenologist and chemist Mª Isabel Mijares, round up such a representative support of Chemistry.
Showing their support and appreciation of Chemistry and celebrating 2011IYC, all of them offer their view, their opinion and their acknowledgement of Chemistry as a science and industry whose contribution in behalf of society, economy and wellbeing is as undeniable as unknown to many and so, they celebrate 2011IYC as an opportunity to make this science and its contributions widely known.
Chemical sector in Spain
Chemical sector in Spain includes more than 3300 companies and generates 11% of the country’s Industrial Gross Product. The sector provides more than 500.000 direct, indirect and induced high quality and high qualification jobs, 89% of contracts of employment being for an indefinite period. With a 25.000 million euros foreign annual turnover, the chemical sector has become the second biggest exporter in the Spanish economy.
The Spanish Chemical sector is also the country’s largest investor in R+D+i, its investment representing 25% of the country’s industry global investment, and employs 20% of the country’s researchers. This effort in research and innovation is what will allow offering the innovative responses our future requires.
