Royal Society of Chemistry Ludwig Mond Medal

 

RSC Prizes and Awards recognise achievements by individuals, teams and organisations in advancing the chemical sciences. There are over 60 Prizes and Awards available, covering all areas of the chemical sciences, which reward those undertaking excellent work in the chemical sciences from across the world.

The Ludwig Mond Award is for outstanding research in any aspect of inorganic chemistry. It is named after Ludwig Mond (1839–1909), a German-born industrial chemist who set-up the first ammonia–soda plant in England, producing soda from common salt, ammonia and carbon dioxide, in partnership with John Brunner. Brunner, Mond & Co was formed in 1881, and merged with others in 1926, forming Imperial Chemical Industries Ltd (ICI). Mond discovered that carbon monoxide, combined with nickel in its ore, formed a gaseous compound, nickel carbonyl. On heating, this decomposed to give pure nickel. Previous winners of the Ludwig Mond Award include Nobel Laureate Sir Geoffrey Wilkinson (Imperial College, London—1981), F. G. A. Stone (Bristol University—1983), Lord Lewis of Newnham (Cambridge University—1985), H. Schmidbauer (Technical University of Munich—1995), M. H. Chisholm (Ohio State University—2001) and R. H. Crabtree (Yale University—2008).

 

The Ludwig Mond Award 2010 was awarded to Professor Dermot O'Hare (University of Oxford) for his creativity in synthetic and physical solid state and molecular inorganic chemistry, and for pioneering work in the kinetics of hydrothermal reactions.
