Throughout 2011 the Chemical Heritage Foundation (CHF) will produce events and programs to further the goals of the International Year of Chemistry.
On February 1 CHF will host the U.S. launch of IYC 2011 in collaboration with the American Chemical Society, the American Chemistry Council, the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, and the U.S. National Committee for the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry.
Prominent leaders from industry and academia will gather at CHF that day to participate in the panel Global Challenges/Chemistry Solutions.
CHF will follow the launch of IYC 2011 with several kickoff events, including the inaugural meeting of a Philadelphia-based IYC 2011 Book Club, the opening of the exhibit Elemental Matters: Artists Imagine Chemistry, and a special edition of Science on Tap, featuring Sam Kean, author of The Disappearing Spoon: And Other True Tales of Madness, Love, and the History of the World from the Periodic Table of the Elements.
One of CHF’s major IYC 2011 programs is already under way. It’s Elemental is a national competition that invites high-school students to create and submit videos inspired by a single element for an interactive periodic table.
Visitors to CHF’s Web site are encouraged to vote for their favorite videos. Winning entries will be selected by a distinguished panel of judges, and prizes will be presented during CHF’s 2011 Heritage Day celebration.
CHF's IYC 2011 celebration will continue all year. Check back often to find out how you can participate.
