FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Aug. 24, 2013 - INDIANAPOLIS, July 30, 2013 — Thousands of scientists and others will get a first-hand look at some of the latest innovations in laboratory instruments here during the 246th National Meeting & Exposition of the American Chemical Society (ACS), the world’s largest scientific society. Those encounters, plus hands-on equipment demonstrations and in-depth workshops, previews of new books and journals, and other draws will come at the exposition part of the meeting, Sunday, Sept. 8, through Tuesday, Sept. 10, in the Indiana Convention Center.

The meeting continues through Sept. 12 in the convention center and downtown hotels.

Vanessa Johnson-Evans, manager of ACS National Meetings Logistics and Attendee & Exhibitor Services, pointed out that much of the emphasis at ACS' two annual national meetings is on the technical sessions, which will feature almost 7,000 presentations on new advances in science and other topics here this week. The exposition is icing on the cake.

“The exposition plays a unique and critical role at ACS national meetings,” Johnson-Evans said. “It gives attendees in-person, direct access to the lab innovations that will enable them to break research barriers.”

On average, between 250 and 300 companies that cover a diverse range of areas from lab equipment to software to education exhibit at the National Meetings. At the Indianapolis meeting, exhibitors include BASF — The Chemical Company; IKA Works, Inc.; Shimadzu Scientific Instruments; and Thermo Scientific.

Attendees from the U.S. and abroad, who range from well-established academic and industry scientists to undergraduate students, can also find out more about ACS and its diverse services. Among other focuses, the ACS exhibit will highlight SciFinder, the online tool that gives users access to the world’s largest collection of chemistry and related science information; ChemWorx, a free, user-friendly research management system; and the many ACS membership benefits.

In addition to previewing cutting-edge lab technology and the latest developments in ACS services, attendees shouldn’t leave Indy without testing their racecar driving skills in a simulator, which will be in the exposition hall. Attendees will also have the chance to win Kindles, gift cards and more through numerous contests and giveaways.

The exposition will be held Sunday evening, Sept. 8, from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.; Monday, Sept. 9, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Tuesday, Sept. 10, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The American Chemical Society is a nonprofit organization chartered by the U.S. Congress. With more than 163,000 members, ACS is the world’s largest scientific society and a global leader in providing access to chemistry-related research through its multiple databases, peer-reviewed journals and scientific conferences.
