Torres Novas is a Portuguese municipality with 280 squared kilometres and almost 40.000 inhabitants. It is located in a central region, one hundred kilometres from Lisbon to the north. The main landscape marks are a great limestone mountain in the north border, and an important wetland area in the south, both included in the
national network of natural parks. Besides the Greeks and Muslims presences, the Roman ruins and other archaeological remnants, the municipality exists since it received the formal authorization from D. Sancho I, the Portuguese king in 1190. Nowadays, Torres Novas is a regional centre to business and commercial activities,
with very good transport connections to Lisbon, Coimbra, Oporto or Madrid.
Our main interest joining the IYC2011 is to promote the general interest of our local population about chemistry values, new investigation fields and recent developments, particulary with all levels of students. We intend to organize some information activities related to chemistry in our public library and also among local schools.
