University College Cork has many student run societies, one of which is ours; The Chemical Society. This year we are celebrating our 85th year in existence, making us one of the oldest societies in the university.

We regularly run events such as the annual Chemistry Ball which includes lecturers, undergrads and Postgrads and a Table Quiz, "The John Tobin Table Quiz", which is the largest in the university (and celebrated 25years last year). We also do trips to industries and organise talks from academics and industry staff. For the freshers week this year we are also doing an outdoor chemistry magic show for everyone in the University and promoting chemistry to all students, regardless of their discipline.

We plan to run an archives exhibition in UCC during the international year of chemistry to celebrate the links between chemistry and the Cork region, including the first President of UCC who was a chemist also- Sir Robert Kane. We have extensive records about the history of the society in UCC as well as chemistry in cork itself. We also plan to make a trip to various other IYC events throughout the year for the members of the society. The Society in the past also did trips out to secondary schools to encourage chemistry in students aged between 15-17 year olds, we plan to do that again for the IYC too.
