IYC Interests:Increase the public appreciation and understanding of chemistry
Encourage interest of young people in chemistry
Generate enthusiasm for the creative future of chemistry
Currently teaching chemistry and physics at International Baccalaureate (IB) level. I hold a Ph.D. in theoretical physics. Taught physics at university level in USA, South Africa, and Lesotho. I have been actively involved in the formulation of national science and technology policy as well as strategies in Lesotho. Last year reviewed science textbooks used at secondary school level in Lesotho. Subsequently held a workshop for science (and mathematics) teachers -- pointed out the shortcomings and deficiencies of the texts and suggested how to teach difficult topics. UNESCO showed interest in this project, and a pilot covering a wider area is being planned. Teaching chemistry at IB (1) deepens my knowledge of chemistry, (2) helps sharpens my teaching skills, and (3) positions me to "Increase the public appreciation and understanding of chemistry " in the interest of science and technology policy and "Encourage interest of young people in chemistry". The IYC2011 is a great opportnity that facilitates achievement of these objectives and gives one the opportunity to network with the international community.
