IYC Interests:Increase the public appreciation and understanding of chemistry
Encourage interest of young people in chemistry
I am a language teacher, writer and teacher trainer. I'm a team member of Science Across the World and a fellow of IUPAC as well as coordinator of the Forum for Across the Curriculum Teaching (www.factworld.info). I've coordinated a number of successful science education events around the world over the past decade including Young Ambassadors for Chemistry, (YACs) with Dr Lida Schoen and have run science workshops for children based on science exhibition themes and dates. It seems to me that the International Year of Chemistry is a perfect opportunity for engaging young people and the larger public with the science of chemistry and its relevance with everyday lives.
In collaboration with a team of chemistry teachers, I've prepared a portfolio of science education events with a focus on young people, chemistry, languages and the real world. This portfolio of activities is written with IYC in mind and envisages public chemistry events where young people work on chemistry projects and engage with the public while doing the science. In this way, the young people mediate between the chemistry and the public which will result in both increased student motivation for chemistry and raising public awareness about chemistry.
