Coinciding with the International Year of Chemistry and the 100th anniversary of Marie Curie’s Nobel Prize in chemistry, the Geffen Playhouse is producing the world premiere of RADIANCE: THE PASSION OF MARIE CURIE. Written by acclaimed actor, writer and science enthusiast Alan Alda, RADIANCE delves into the life and romance of one of the most brilliant female scientists in history. Famous for her groundbreaking research in radioactivity, Curie was the only person ever to win two Nobel Prizes in multiple sciences, but not without a struggle. For all the answers that come to her in the lab, Curie’s life is peppered with questions of how to realize the passion she has for both knowledge and love. Celebrated but then rejected by the popular press as both a woman and scientist, Curie is left to define her place in society – and history – on her own terms.
As a hub of the Los Angeles theater scene since 1995, the Geffen Playhouse is know for its mix of classics and contemporary plays, provocative new works and musicals. This year, RADIANCE: THE PASSION OF MARIE CURIE is not only an ideal fit for the season but also a remarkably timely piece for the science community. The theater is excited for this opportunity to join forces with the chemistry community to present this show. It will run from November 1 through December 11, 2011.
In addition to RADIANCE, the Geffen Playhouse is bringing the story of Marie Curie to its younger audiences with BRILLIANCE!, a family-friendly spin-off of the premiere play. Performed by the Geffen Playhouse Story Pirates, BRILLIANCE! will inspire audience of all ages to laugh and cheer their way through a fast-paced and interactive exploration of Madame Curie’s radioactive discoveries. This companion piece will run on selected Saturdays at 11 a.m. from November 12 to December 10 in conjunction with its parent show.
