IYC Interests:Increase the public appreciation and understanding of chemistry
Generate enthusiasm for the creative future of chemistry
I´m the head of a National Chemistry Resource Center for chemistry teachers (KRC, www.krc.su.se) in Sweden. We are looking for all sorts of chemistry celebrating events that could increase the general knowledge and understanding of what chemistry is about and how dependent our modern societies are upon this knowledge
As opposed to the media view that chemistry is all about danger, poisons, contaminating nature etc. We´d like to find companions that may share with ideas about how to best deliver the message that chemistry is all around us.
In a modern society we all need to know how to handle chemicals, how to interpret chemical products that we use in every day life, but we must also focus on how to encourage people to get involved professionally in chemistry. The latter is especialy important when addtressing young people ,who grow up in an ever changing society, where it is easy to get lost in the tide of information that is streaming upon us .
During the IYC year we will publish experiment quizzes (videos) at our web-site, www.krc.su.se, a calender for teachers, and laboratory excersises, connected to 12 monthly themes (chosen by the national IYC, see www.kemi2011.se for more information) as well as to the curriculum of Swedish schools. Naturally we will also participate in and arrange ourselves some conferences, activities and courses, the most prominent a Nordic one at oct. 28-28 in Stockholm.
