IYC Interests:Encourage interest of young people in chemistry
I studied chemistry at the University of Illinois (BS 1976, MS Organic Chemistry 1978). I was employed at the USGypsum R&D facility for a number of years. Currently I am employed as an Industrial Technology teaching assistant in a middle school.
I lead an after-school science club in a k-5 elementary school. We cover seven to eight topics per school year, spending one to two sessions on each. I will place particular emphasis on chemistry topics in spring 2011 and fall 2011 in recognition of the IYC. This spring we had two sessions on electrochemistry (batteries) and one on analytical chemistry (analyzing soil samples for N, P, and K). Two sessions next fall will focus on carbon dioxide (with support from the American Chemical Society). I haven't decided what the second fall 2011 chemistry topic will be.
