IYC Interests:Encourage interest of young people in chemistry
Celebrate the role of women in chemistry
I am a student of first year undergraduate degree course of chemistry in Meenakshi College for Women in Chennai, India. After my higher secondary course i preferred to choose Chemistry as my career while majority of my classmates / students in our country rush behind engineering courses.
Chemistry is considered to be the boring subject even among the chemistry students. But i am very much proud to be a chemistry student as i am enjoying the subject while studying. I am applying the concepts and seeing its applications in all the fields and also in our day today life. I am also motivating my classmates to apply in their own lives what they are studying. that will make the subject interesting. I am also motivating my sister to take science stream next year while joining the secondary course.
During 2011, in view of the IYC our Chemistry Department of our college will be organizing chemistry day program in the first week of February. I will give my contribution to this program. I will also organize demonstrations and awareness classes on chemistry in everyday life to the students in my neighboring school next academic year by August. I will make use of this occasion to share on the role of women scientists (Mary Curie, Irene Curie, Lisa Meitner) in chemistry and also try to create interest among students in persuading higher education in science.
