I am the 2010-2011 President of Division 1 of IUPAC which is for Physical and Biophysical Chemistry. IUPAC is a co-sponsor of IYC 2011 along with UNESCO.
Division 1 of IUPAC wishes to stimulate student and public interest in physical and biophysical chemistry during IYC 2011 and for that purpose plans to launch cartoon and video competitions. The competitions will run from 1 Jan to 31 May 2011. For each competition there will be a $1000 first prize and an invitation to attend the IUPAC Congress in Puerto Rico in August 2011 where the first prizes will be presented. There will be a further five prizes of $100 to finalist entries in each competition.
Student Chemistry Cartoon Competition. The goal of the competition is to clearly illustrate a chemistry principle in a manner that can enrich the teaching of chemistry. Full details will be available from the IYC website.
Student Physical Chemistry Video Competition. The goal of the competition is to clearly illustrate a physical chemistry principle in a manner that can enrich the teaching of physical chemistry. Full details will be available from the IUPAC website.
