Euro Chlor and the chlor-alkali industry

Almost 2,000,000 jobs in Europe are related to chlorine and its co-product caustic soda. These two key chemical building blocks underpin 55% of the European chemical industry turnover. More than 90% of the European drinking water is made safe with chlorine and about 85 % of all medicines are synthesised using chlorine chemistry. Two thirds of European chlorine pro¬duction is used in engineering materials – polymers, resins and elastomers. Caustic soda is used in various industries, e.g. aluminium, metallurgy, glass, soaps and detergents, textiles.

Euro Chlor is the business association representing chlor-alkali producers in the EU and EFTA regions, employing 39,000 people at 76 manufacturing sites.

As a crucial chemical industry, Euro Chlor fully supports the aims of the International Year of Chemistry in promoting chemistry as a key science that enables solutions, addresses future societal challenges and contributes to sustainable development.
