I am a Science and Engineering lecturer in a Further Education college and teach Chemistry from school level up to HNC. In my 6 years of teaching I have found that many students have no idea where Chemistry fits into the everday world and the impact it has, they view it as an academic subject and a means to an end in terms of obtaining qualifications. We need to encourage more interest in Science as early as possible to find the stars of the future. The IYC is the perfect vehicle to launch this and also to reduce the teaching domination of Biology. Most levels of Chemistry have a "topical" subject area and the Global Water Experiment will fit in perfectly here, it should also bring a community spirit to the department as well as having a international impact.
