Tekes, the Finnish Funding Agency for Technology and Innovation is the main public financing and expert organisation for research and technological development in Finland. Tekes finances industrial R&D projects as well as projects in universities and research institutes. Tekes has a budget of 600 million euros (2010), a source of funding for over 2,000 projects annually.

Tekes’ Functional Materials programme is the multi-annual public funding programme for material technology. The duration of programme is seven years, spanning 2007 – 2013. The total budget is approx. 200 million euros. The Programme aims to develop new applications and competive advantage through materials technology for Finnish industry. The main research areas of the programme are understanding materials and their features, tailoring functionality, and the control, production, application and disposal of materials.
