The IYC 2011 has come at a time when the profile of chemistry education in Zambia has really gone down. Very few young people are willing to major in chemistry due to limited job opportunities for chemistry graduates in Zambia. This is a very sad state of affairs especially given the fact that a country like Zambia requires skilled chemists to develop new products, processes and methods of utilization of the abundant natural resources - minerals, plants and animals.

For me as a practicing chemist, the IYC 2011 will serve as a platform for the promotion of chemistry as a scientific career and as a business tool. Therefore the link between chemistry and industry needs to be promoted and strengthened. Chemistry should not be viewed only as a tool to be used to solve some problem in industry but as the basis for industrial development and as an end in itself.
