IYC Interests:Increase the public appreciation and understanding of chemistry
Encourage interest of young people in chemistry
Generate enthusiasm for the creative future of chemistry
Celebrate the role of women in chemistry
There is little I can add to the four main IYC interests aforementioned. Due to the mismanagement of chemicals previously to the '70s, and the political propaganda of fundamentalist environmental organisations, Chemistry has been splashed (if not to say almost drowned) by propaganda -both ideological and political- deeming it as an fearful activity, only right for Dr. Evil and his team to be interested in it. This wrong image has to be changed, and I believe the IYC is THE RIGHT TIME to do it.
Mining, pharmaceuticals, plastics, oil, batteries, almost everything we see around and use everyday can't be even imagined without a chemical process in the middle. Fundamentalist environmental fanatics could not do anything without inks and paper to print their stuff, and without materials to make computers to spam the world with their fake message.
I've made my carreer mainly as a secondary teacher (although I am a Chemistry graduate) , and I have been involved with the International Baccalaureate as Deputy Chief Examiner a few years ago.
